Newton Teen is a Congressional Art Competition Winner
Newton, MA — Angela Nie, a junior at Newton North High School, has won the Massachusetts’ Fourth District’s annual Congressional Art Competition with her painting, “Anticipation," selected from more than 60 pieces of artwork by local students. Her work will be featured alongside other Congressional Art Competition winners from across the country.
“Congratulations to Angela Nie of Newton North for winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” said Congressman Jake Auchincloss (D-MA 4). "Angela’s piece, ‘Anticipation,’ will be showcased at the U.S. Capitol," he noted.
Congressman Auchincloss held a reception for the participating artists at the Attleboro Arts Museum. At the reception, student artists and their parents gathered to view each others' works and celebrate the judges' top picks.
Following the reception, Angela described her thoughts behind her piece of original art. “Although my intended message was about flies in my stomach during nervous anticipation (a less perfect take on ‘butterflies in my stomach’), I hope that anyone is able to understand this feeling. Not every moment needs to be as perfect as a flutter.”
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. This year, the judging panel included Mim Brooks Fawcett of the Attleboro Arts Museum, Seline Smith of the New Art Center in Newton, and Robin Wessman, a painter from Sharon.
