Newton North High School Junior Wins Congressional Art Competition
Newton North High School junior Angela Nie's painting "Anticipation" will be featured for one year in the U.S. Capitol building.
NEWTON, MA – Angela Nie, a junior at Newton North High School, won the Massachusetts Fourth District’s annual congressional art competition with her painting “Anticipation.”
“I appreciate the annual opportunity to showcase students’ creativity and skills," Nie said in a news release after being recognized during Congressman Jake Auchincloss' (MA-4) art competition reception at the Attleboro Arts Museum.
Nie said the intended message behind the painting was about having butterflies in her stomach during nervous anticipation.
"I hope that anyone is able to understand this feeling. Not every moment needs to be as perfect as a flutter," Nie said.
Nie’s painting was chosen from more than 60 pieces of local artwork and will be featured for one year in the U.S. Capitol building alongside other Congressional Art Competition winners from across the country.
“Congratulations to Angela Nie of Newton North for winning this year’s Congressional Art Competition,” Auchincloss said in a news release.
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.
Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries.
This year, the judging panel included Mim Brooks Fawcett of the Attleboro Arts Museum, Seline Smith of the New Art Center in Newton, and Robin Wessman, a painter from Sharon.
