Jake Auchincloss did something historic on the House floor: He delivered a speech written entirely by AI.

What happened: Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) took to the floor to deliver a speech crafted entirely by the artificial intelligence program ChatGPT — and it sounded pretty much like any other floor speech.

The AI-generated speech, reported first by The Boston Globe, comes as Auchincloss prepares to reintroduce a bipartisan bill aimed at boosting research and collaboration between the U.S. and Israel on artificial intelligence.

"This is a critical step forward in an era where AI and its implications are taking center stage in public discourse. We must collaborate with international partners like the Israeli government to ensure that the United States maintains a leadership role in AI research and development, and responsibly explores the many possibilities evolving technologies provide."

— Auchincloss in his one-minute floor speech

Auchincloss delivered his remarks during the opening part of the day where members can give short, one-minute speeches on any topic.

What was the prompt he used? Well, according to an aide:

"You are Jake Auchincloss, a Member of Congress. Write 100 words to deliver on the floor of the House of Representatives. Topic: the importance of the United States–Israel Artificial Intelligence Center Act, which the congressman will re-introduce this term. The text of this bill is available here: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/5148/text?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22%22%5D%7D&r=2&s=1. A press release on this bill is available here: https://auchincloss.house.gov/media/press-releases/release-auchincloss-introduces-bill-create-us-israel-artificial-intelligence. Content goal: explain to audience the importance of international collaboration on AI research. Writing style: formal speech."

Auchincloss also used the AI system for a social media post on the speech:

He's also not the only House Democrat from New England with AI on the mind on Tuesday.
