Auchincloss Only Democratic Veteran to Vote Against NDAA

“You don’t have to be a veteran to know that the defense budget is out of control. Unfortunately, this budget doesn’t reflect that reality.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Tonight, Congressman Jake Auchincloss (D-MA04) was the only Democratic veteran to vote against the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Congressman Auchincloss is a Major in the Marine reserves and a member of the Defense Spending Reduction Caucus. A video of his statement and a transcript can be found below.

“Today I’m going to be the only Democratic veteran to vote against the $760,000,000 defense budget. The Pentagon is the biggest bureaucracy in the world, and I have never seen a bureaucracy in business or government that could not do 10 percent more with 10 percent less. That’s why I voted in favor of my colleagues’ Mark Pocan, Barbara Lee, Ocasio-Cortez’s amendment to reduce the size of the Pentagon by at least 10 percent. As we wind down our forever wars in Central Asia and in the Middle East, we should be using this money instead to invest in global public health, in climate change, and in research and development - the dimensions that are actually going to predict success in the 21st Century and that will allow the United States to outcompete the Chinese Communist Party.”
