Vladimir Putin needs to ‘get squarely punched in the face’: Massachusetts congressman

Russia has been suffering from economic sanctions as it invades Ukraine, but it’s time for the U.S. and other countries to ramp up the punishment even more, U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss said on Sunday.

The Democratic rep from Newton said Russian President Vladimir Putin needs to “get squarely punched in the face” with energy sanctions.

That would mean the U.S. banning the import of Russian oil, a step that NATO countries are weighing as Russia relentlessly attacks Ukraine.

Auchincloss said a no-fly zone would be “an act of war” against Russia.

“We would be going to war with Russia. That’s what a no-fly zone means,” he said. “That is an unnecessary escalation in the conflict that risks a wider war.

“What we can do, though, what we can do is work with our NATO allies to provide the Ukrainian forces with their No. 1 item on their supply wish list,” Auchincloss said. “Which is more planes, more drones and more surface-to-air missiles.”
