Taunton leaders host U.S. rep at development sites
Taunton officials joined U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss for a tour of businesses and redevelopment sites in Weir Village on July 27, highlighting economic challenges and future development opportunities across the neighborhood.
Mayor Shaunna O'Connell and Office of Economic and Community Development Director Jay Pateakos welcomed Auchincloss to the city, according to a community announcement. State Sen. Kelly Dooner also participated in visits to DeAvila's Restaurant & Catering, the former McGrath's building, the Riverhouse and the former Bacon Felt property.
The tour focused on hearing directly from business owners about issues affecting their operations and future growth plans.
Carlos DeAvila, co-owner of DeAvila's Restaurant & Catering, said rising food costs remain one of the biggest challenges facing restaurants after 42 years in the industry.
Jill Finnerty of 2 Jerks Restaurant discussed the narrow profit margins her business faces, increasing beef prices and the work required to convert the former McGrath's building into the restaurant's future Taunton location.
Riverhouse co-owner Cheryl Latour spoke about limited parking and higher food costs.
At each stop, Auchincloss met with business owners and heard concerns about operating costs, redevelopment efforts and economic conditions affecting local businesses.
At the former Bacon Felt property, owner Joseph Holdiman outlined plans for the site's first phase of redevelopment. Those plans include artist micro-galleries and creative spaces intended to support Taunton's arts community and help create a walkable destination, according to the announcement.
The group also visited the recently renovated Walker Park and walked the path leading to the boat ramp before arriving at the Bacon Felt site. During the visit, Auchincloss learned about the history of the former F.B. Rhodes manufacturing plant that once occupied the property.
City officials said bringing together local, state and federal leaders with business owners helps ensure concerns are shared directly with policymakers and supports ongoing efforts to strengthen the local economy, according to the announcement.
