Massachusetts leaders break ground on new Sturdy Hospital facility

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — Massachusetts leaders broke ground Friday on a new emergency department for Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

The expanded center will have 50 private emergency department rooms, a 12-bed behavioral health unit for patients experiencing mental health crises, two trauma bays, CT scanning and other imaging services.

“That’s what makes today so exciting,” said U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, who secured $2.85 million from the federal government for the project. “Everyone is going to receive first-class health care right here in the community.”

The project in total will cost around $113 million. Some of the funding came from Sturdy Health, while the rest came from federal dollars and donations.

Massachusetts Congressman Jake Auchincloss was also in attendance at the ceremony.

“It’s going to be our first responders. It’s going to be our health care practitioners,” Auchincloss said. “It’s going to be the patients. It’s going to be our state officials and our federal delegation working in tandem to do what Massachusetts has always done best, which is to innovate under pressure to deliver superior, dignified health care.”

Aimee Brewer, the president and CEO of Sturdy Health, said U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Markey and Auchincloss had previously visited Sturdy to view the current facilities for themselves.

Construction is being done by Consigli Construction. Sturdy executives said they hope to have the building fully open and ready to help patients by fall 2027.
