Franklin’s Cong. Auchincloss on Trip to Ireland and UK

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Wednesday, led a bipartisan, bicameral congressional delegation to Ireland and the United Kingdom that included 4th
District Congressman, Democrat Jake Auchincloss.

The lawmakers will meet with officials in London and Dublin to discuss securing peace in Northern Ireland, the war in Ukraine, strategic implications of AUKUS (the trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the US pulled together by the Biden Administration in 2021. They will also be discussing transatlantic coordination on competition with China. Other members of the delegation include U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and U.S. Representatives David Joyce (R-Ohio), Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), and Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.).

“My goal is to convey to our strong allies Congress’ bipartisan support for shared values and interests, particularly regarding support for Ukraine, competition with China, and upholding the Good Friday Agreement,” said Auchincloss.

While Murphy went on to emphasize his own Irish heritage and the large number of Irish Americans he represents, it seems Auchincloss, too, has Irish connections of sorts.

In an oral history recorded last year, father Hugh Auchincloss, a respected figure in the world of medicine, recalled incidents from his long career as well as his personal life and noted that he and his wife had struggled to find a satisfactory nanny situation for their three children, including Jake, until, “We ended up with an Irish couple who lived with us for about seven or eight years. They had two children of their own while they lived with us. They became sort of second mother and father to my children. We had what might be described as an extended family arrangement. I'm still in touch with this nanny and her husband, but I don't think of her as a nanny.”

And, he added, “My children seem to have survived their somewhat unusual up-bringing.”
