Auchincloss: 'Best answers to Sino-American competition will be found in the United States'
America has the ability to repair the relationship between China and America; however, only if it starts in America and reinforces our strengths, Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) said in a statement provided to State Newswire.
“This Congress, and my generation, have an opportunity to rise above politics to chart a course for sound strategy. The best answers to Sino-American competition will be found in the United States, not in China,” Auchincloss said in his statement. “Our own cultivation of freedom, democracy and science will be the hallmarks of a winning strategy. If Americans allow this heritage to wither, then no plan can save us. If we reinvigorate these strengths, then no nation can outcompete us. I’m ready to chart that course.”
This correction starts in the newly formed House Select Committee on China, he said in his statement.
The Hill reported that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) filled the final spots for the party’s committee roster in the new Congress. Members of the select committees on Intelligence, China, COVID-19 and the “weaponization" of government were appointed.
The top Democratic seat on the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, a panel created last month with broad bipartisan, will be Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), who also is a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
The other Democrats on the China panel will be Reps. Kathy Castor (D-FL), André Carson (D-IN), Seth Moulton (D-MA), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), Haley Stevens (D-MI), Auchincloss (D-MA), Ritchie Torres (D-NY) and Shontel Brown (D-OH).
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) released a statement after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) selected him to chair the Select Committee on China, thanking him for his leadership and for naming him as its chair.
“The greatest threat to the United States is the Chinese Communist Party. The CCP continues to commit genocide, obscure the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, steal hundreds of billions of dollars worth of American intellectual property and threaten Taiwan. The Select Committee on China will push back in a bipartisan fashion before it’s too late. Even in divided government, we have an opportunity to build a united front against CCP aggression,” Gallagher said in his statement.
McCarthy said in a statement that he chose to create the House Select Committee on China after the U.S. spent decades welcoming China into the globally system through policies, but China has exported oppression, aggression and anti-Americanism.
“But here’s the good news – there is bipartisan consensus that the era of trusting Communist China is over,” he said in his statement.
McCarthy said he thought that instead of the American government being divided with different messages, a bipartisan committee could provide a single message with one voice, according to his statement.
He and his colleagues agree that Communist China poses a serious threat that can best be addressed with the creation of the Select Committee on China, McCarthy said in the statement.
“The Select Committee on China will create the plan that will take us where we really need to go. It will get us all on the same page and move us in the right direction,” he said.
Committee members will work in a bipartisan manner and take the best ideas no matter where they come from, he said in his statement.
“At the end of the day, we won’t need a minority and majority report. We’ll just need one philosophy, with one principle, and America will be stronger for the future to come,” McCarthy said.
